Holders Season on Barbados, an annual extravaganza in the grounds of the 17C Holders Great House, has established a reputation as the premier arts event in the Caribbean and is often referred to as ‘the Glyndebourne of the West Indies’. During our 12 day visit to the island we attend three performances, including classical piano duets; a poetry evening with Simon Williams, “Love is all around”; and a Gala night with the acclaimed Broadway stars, The Three Mo’ Tenors.

With its cricket matches and Anglican parish churches Barbados still reflects its British colonial past, but this is also an exuberant Caribbean island of calypso, rum and flying fish, with miles of sugarcane fields, little villages characterised by wooden ‘chattel houses’ and a relaxed, warmly welcoming atmosphere that brings visitors back year after year.

We divide our stay between the sparsely inhabited breezy Atlantic coast which offers scenic walking, and the west, or Platinum, coast, with its pink coral sand beaches, where low key elegance is the order of the day. Island-wide walks take us to Jacobean Great Houses, 18C signal towers and several fine botanical gardens and we also swim with turtles and attend a village cricket match and a polo game.
