We begin our explorations in Berlin, a city which
more than any other European capital embodies the history of the 20C and
stands as a symbol of the immense pressures and changes which have shaped
both West and East Europe. After seeing the 18C palaces in the park at
Sanssouci, we travel south to Saxony and spend 4 days exploring this
picturesque sandstone mountain area on foot. A vintage paddle steamer takes
us along the river Elbe to Dresden, an 800 year-old treasure trove of
architecture and art, now superbly restored to its former glory. As befits cities at the centre of European
cultural life for centuries, Berlin and Dresden’s opera & concert houses
enjoy an international reputation. During our visit we attend the following performances: BERLIN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
Chorus conductor, Donald Runnicles Hector Berlioz REQUIEM SEMPER OPERA HOUSE, DRESDEN Verdi ‘OTELLO’ |
