Since 1566, when Andrea Amati developed the modern violin in Cremona, the Bottege Liutarie (stringed instrument workshops) of the city, have made it the world’s violin capital, reaching an apogee with the instruments produced by Antonio Stradivarius. As a highlight of our visit, we attend a recital on several of these incomparable instruments. Furthermore, Claudio Monteverdi, the first great opera composer, was born in Cremona in 1567 and we attend the following 2 concerts of the annual Monteverdi Festival:

22  May  21.00 – Chiesa di San Marcellino

Monteverdi and Cavalli in Venice

Music by Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Cavalli performed by:

I Virtuosi delle Muse, conducted by Stefano Molardi

23 May  21.00 – Teatro A. Ponchielli

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy       Overture “The Hebrides”

Symphony no.4 in A major op. 90 “The Italian”

Johann Sebastian Bach                    Suite for Orchestra no.3 in D major BWV 1068

Luigi Cherubini Orchestra, conducted by Kurt Masur

During our eight day stay we also visit Verdi’s quiet country birthplace; discover the little-known treasures of the ideal Renaissance ‘city’ of Sabbioneta; explore the artistic and epicurean delights of Parma; tour castles and private gardens and enjoy outstanding cuisine in several Slow Food restaurants.
