Two opposing geographic regions of India, Uttaranchal in the
Himalayan foothills, and the desert region of Rajasthan, and two contrasting
cultures, are combined in a unique and magical experience. The link is the
common aim to encourage the survival of two distinct traditions. The mountain
villages of the Kumaon district, accessed only by footpaths, are the focus
for beautiful walks through the forests of the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Five tiny communities, where age-old farming methods are practised, welcome
small groups of visitors to experience remote village life. In total
contrast, the mighty Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, begun in 1459 high on a
rocky outcrop, is brought to life during the vibrant and colourful Rajasthan
International Folk Festival. Designed to coincide with the brightest full
moon of the year, it showcases the traditional music and performing arts of
the region. Accommodation ranges
from the elegant 4-star Oberoi-Maidens Hotel in Delhi, simple stone-built
guesthouses in the mountain villages, and fully-equipped luxury Royal Tents
in Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. In the villages the wholesome local cooking is
entirely vegetarian and based on local produce and in Jodhpur we sample more
sophisticated Rajasthani cooking. |
