For a
millennium, Hungarian-speaking Szeklers were entrusted with the defence of
Europe’s eastern borders, and the inhabitants of these remote Transylvanian
villages still enjoy the status and privileges of nobility as reward. We
begin our journey staying in considerable comfort on the village estate of
Count Kalnoky and a classic Edwardian 4 star hotel in the mountains,
discovering the mediaeval castles and fortified & frescoed churches of
the region. In Bucharest we stay in the celebrated Athenée Palace Hotel (5 star) with its long history of intrigue and espionage, and the setting for Olivia Manning’s ‘Balkan Trilogy’. We attend an opera performance by the Romanian National Opera and a concert at the Athenaeum, and investigate the many fine museums and galleries of the capital. |
